REPORTS TO:  Building Principal

COLLABORATES WITH: Special Education Director and other School Nurses

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

To be considered qualified for this position, candidates must minimally have the following:

  1. Registration under Massachusetts Board of Registration
  2. Such alternative to the above qualifications as the School Committee may deem appropriate.
  3. Experience with electronic health records
  4. Experience with orthopedic assessment of injuries
  5. Familiar with policy writing/revisions in accordance with MA state laws and MDPH.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS which include but are not limited to:

  1. Identifies and assesses the health needs of students.
  2. Assists the physician in health appraisals of students when indicated.
  3. Participates in developing a plan for eliminating, minimizing, or accepting health issues through addressing these with students, parents and school personnel.
  4. Develops a network between school health services and community health programs/agencies.
  5. As a member of the School Housekeeping and Safety Committee, assists in the identification of any health and safety issues which could affect students and school personnel and recommends necessary modifications to the committee.
  6. Provides emergency care in case of injury or sudden illness.
  7. Maintains access to pertinent family history and assesses home situation factors of school children and makes appropriate referrals and recommendations.
  8. Serves as an active member of the CORE evaluation team process when the meeting involves a child on medication or with any health issue(s) that could interfere with and/or impact school performance.
  9. Coordinates and conducts preventative state-mandated screening program (e.g., vision, hearing, scoliosis) and notifies parents of any need for further referral.
  10. Monitors and administers prescription and non-prescription medication in accordance with Massachusetts state laws and Seekonk school policy.
  11. Provides in-service training to school personnel in first aid and individual school issues.
  12. Maintains accurate and complete health records on students.
  13. Communicates and confirms with the student’s physicians any student health restrictions.
  14. Attends conferences to maintain up to date professional growth and development.
  15. Implements health promotion which will provide formal and informal health programs to all students within the building to which they are assigned.
  16. Remains current in regard to all health regulations and enforces all regulations issued through the Department of Education and Public Health.
  17. Required to assume the responsibility of instructing health education classes to meet the needs of a building.
  18. Assumes other building responsibilities at the discretion of the building principal.
  19. Abides with MIAA sports physicals.
  20. Other duties, as assigned by the building principal.
  21. Develops and monitors 504/health care plan process.
  22. May be required to work in a district-wide capacity at the discretion of the building principal and Director of Special Education.
